Movie Review: ‘Lucy’

Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman
Direction: Luc Besson
Rating: Three stars out of five
So let’s start with the premise of Luc Besson’s “Lucy,” starring Scarlett Johansson: Human beings only use 10 percent of their brain capacity. Imagine what it would be like if we could access 100 percent of it?
When asked this question, Professor Norman (Morgan Freeman) says, “I don’t know.”

the movie is fiction anyway. The more relevant question, though, is how much of your own brain you should use when watching “Lucy”

Scarlett Johansson stars as the titular Lucy, an American student living in Taipei. The problem begins when she is forced by her boyfriend to deliver a locked suitcase. She has no idea what’s in it and she has to deliver it to a barbaric Korean gangster, Jang. As she enters his room, he is already on a killing spree inside his hotel room. The bag contains a powerful drug  a shiny blue crystal called cph4 that will not just give a high but will boost the brain so that it’s used a lot more than just 10 per cent.

The drug’s effect is to enhance Lucy’s brain capacity. As it starts to climb  20 percent, 30 percent, and so on .Lucy can suddenly speak Chinese. She can shoot six guys at a time. She can hear and see and feel everything.lucy-movie-poster-11
Because she’s becoming so smart, Lucy uses two laptops at a time, furiously unlocking the secrets of science — she knows that her condition gives her only 24 hours to live.
Lucy tracks down Professor Norman, the neuroscientist who has done extensive study on this subject. It took him years to study but Lucy read all of it within seconds.

The film is worth watching because of Scarlett Johansson who effortlessly slips into this character. It’s a treat to see her in a drugged state and her non-stop high is quite a spectacle!

“Lucy,” a Universal Studios release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America “for strong violence, disturbing images, and sexuality.”
